hi my names jimmy , i just started getting into rc boats. this is my first real build and i didnt have a whole lot of money for parts. it is the 12 cell silent thunder hull from bby racing that i have , i already started the inside but i will snap some now pics before i go any further. the motor is going to be the graupner 700 turbo , i have a 40 amp pro boat esc (that will run 10cells 12 volts) , stock graupner 4mm flex drive , the hydro flex 111 hardware (that i intend to split into a strut and off set rudder) , a hitech 311 servo , and hitech 2 channel receiver w/ agressor radio. i hope 10 cells is enough to have some fun ? i will post some pics tomorrow , any input is quite welcome.

heres the hull and hardware

this is the boat hull i have started already and the hardware going in it. im new to this and i dont have alot of money so be gentle !

all i have is the pdf file on putting this boat together , how do you mean more reinforcment ? and all i have is a bby racing sticker so far.

ok , i know im slow but i reinforced the carbon tubes with strips of fiberglass like th inst. say and i have glued the boat together. i think i got a good seal (to make sure i left a small gap at the top of the left sponson and blew in , it swelled and blew the air back out) now to cut the cowl out and let some super thin ca roll around the inside. my fins are shaped and ready , this sould speed up after i get it sanded. i will post some more pics soon !

Looking good Jimmy. The carbon rods and fg strips will be plenty of reinforcement for that hull. If you cut the outside seam flush, be sure to run plenty of medium CA around the join inside. If you leave the overhang, just run a fillet of medium CA around the joint and you'll have a very strong hull.

I cut a fair bit of the plywood doublers out of mine either side of the motor - it lets you out the cells further forward to get a better balance.

You won't see the hull's potential on 10 cells, but it will be a start. When you can, upgrade your ESC and then the cells to 2 x 2S lipo (connected in series). They'll fit nicely on each side of the motor. The power increase will be amazing, but the motor and everything will still run cool.

Also, try to replace your plugs with Deans (minimum) or 5.5mm bullet connectors. Deans are foolproof and will work well with the power you're running, but 5.5mm bullets will give you more flexibility with wiring (+ve and -ve don't need to be together) and give you a lot of upgrade potential. There might be guys on here willing to give you Deans for the cost of shipping, as the brushless stuff draws more power then Deans can handle now. I'm in Aus, so shipping is $$$, otherwise I'd send you some stuff.

If you stick with a brushed power system, you should be able to pick up high-end equipment cheaply in the swap shop here.

Hi Jimmy,

I designed that boat and kitted it for several years before selling the design to BBY. If you have any questions, I'll be happy to help. You can find a lot of information on it from the early days of when I sold it, about 1998-2001 or so. There are several improvements you can do - the most important ones are to increase the angle on the sponsons by adding a "wedge" from the step to the transom of the sponsons.

Most of the information will be on the RumRunnerRacing.com forums.

thanks for input guys , you know i would love to tweak this thing but its my first ! i thought i would get a feel buy following the instructions this time and see what i produce. i am trying to do a good job putting it together and painting it to see if im any good (dont know if my next will be a build or a setup you know). i am definitly thinking of brushless for my next boat , probably still hydro too ! about the 10 cell thing , i got a 110 amp esc on ebay i was wanting to try 12 cells on but i think its only 12v , is that possible ? well , got to work.

ok , im having a litle trouble. when i started sand down the outside i went to far with the seam , any ideas on how to strenthen that back and get a smooth even sand still ? i also would like some advice for the corners and nose of the boat , i am lost , i have no clue how to make this look good now , please any adice is welcome !

Hey Jimmy, can you poat some pics of the dammage. I am building a BBY boat and I am new at this as well, but mabye I could help as I am going to have a bit of damage.. I got some CA on the sponson tips when I was putting carbon fiber in the hull.
Also, you could call Randy at BBY for advice.

thanx joe , yes randy has been very helpfull. (i didnt get pis of the damage)what happened is i sanded the sides of the hull to close on the seam so i smoothed some putty on it and sanded it back down again.now i am scared to sand wrong on the sponsas so i am leaving a small 1/8" ridge around the bottom where hull and deck meet. i am going to snap some pics as is then start a finish sanding and prime it before i put in the running gear and electronics , i think it will be ok , i am not easilly discoureged !

Hey Jimmy. Sounds like you've got the repair covered.
I am building, slowly a boat for my wife that will be using the same Graupner motor, but on 12 cells. You might want to try the same for more ooomph.
Also keep an eye out for other 700 motors that come up for sale relatively cheap on these sites. I hear that they are more powerful than the Graupner.

well here are some more pics , top , bottom , cowl and fins , and repaired side. im fixing to put the stuffing box in before i sand it again and prime before really doing the inside. i also have an idea about putting a peice of plastic as a floor with cutouts for the servo , motor mount , and stuff box. just for looks ofcourse , to make the bottom not have the tubes and cloth look and the battries will have a smooth spot(if this is not a good idea please tell me). gotta get to work , will post more pics later.

ok its been to long , this is the boat with stuffing tube (a peice of 5/16" ss tube) installed and running gear on , i had to fab a strut bracket (cut a socket set case on the side for those) and trim up the graupner strut to fit , then trim down the rudder assy to offset. next step epoxy everthing in.

now , this is motor and servo mount glued , plastic bottom in (cut a plastic school folder for that)just taped down , the electronics placed with tape , and the cowl set (with cut refrigerator magnets) all primed up , oh the wings are on to ! yea , i know this boat sounds like sanford & son but i do what i can. now to take it apart and paint before installing everything for good. please , comments welcome !
