I am not stopped by advice from people who do not have direct experience with configurations, or boat building in general.
I wanted to try it, I did and have since removed it almost a year ago.
The reason was not power loss, and not even the massive heat generation by the gear box (which was designed for gas applications that had open hull drains to allow for the open system cooling), it was because it weighed several pounds and I had too much trouble getting weight distributed so it would perform well.
