Hello everyone,

I have started up on several new builds recently after wrapping up the spartan and the genesis. I'm building a few for myself, and a couple for my friends , and I figured, to keep it better organized, I'd just post all my work into one thread as I go along.


This one I just got from my buddy SD Eracer. His main requirements were to make it as strong as possible and to set it up as a single with a lot of head room to go fast. It's a pleasure to work on this as it's completely intact w/o holes, wooden trays, etc. Good and ready for reinforcement!

As usual, the tips and the transom are the first things I do as they are sort of like a welcoming step to every build for me. The process is simple: blackened epoxy mixed with some strenghtening additives, a level to get the hull perfectly vertical, and a fan to make sure it doesn't overheat/distort while curing.

Installed the rudder. I decided to use stronger/longer bolts as the original ones that come with this rudder seem a bit weak, and with the transom reinforcement they would not be long enough.

Once this was bolted on, I backed it up with some more epoxy mix to seal it off against water leaks and to prevent the nuts from coming loose. Next I'm trying to figure out the best approach for the linkage rod, will post pics of that when I get to it. After that I'll do an inlay on hull and hatch, plus additional reinforcements of the upper decks, and the rest should be fairly straight forward.

How do you determine how much resin fiber mixture to pour into the transom?
How do you determine how much resin fiber mixture to pour into the tips?
When you have that much resin hardening (in such a small area) how do you manage the heat generated (to keep from blisterring paint)?

I think I got carried away with mine and put too much resin fiber mixture intot he transom and tips. This became apparent when I looked into drilling the mounting holes for my rudder. Oops. Need to order longer mounting bolts.

I tape off the tips in case there is pin holes. Then I submerge the tips in water while its curing. No warp. I just leaned this here recently and it works.

Yup! I do the same, it works well. You could use a fan instead but water works way better/faster. I bought a bucket the other day from Lowes and I use it for this, plus when I do the foam.

As for the amount of resin, you need enough to make the tips and transom solid, but not too much where the weight becomes a concern. I used about 2 ounces for the tips and 3 for the transom. The added weight up front is useful and the resin will keep the tips from splitting apart under stress as that's the area most rtr boats start to split.

Just posting everything I've done these past few days, in random order. Made some rudder CF plates using my own sheets. Right now I'm working on 4 boats: the same old spartan (finishing up), 2 genesis boats (mine and a friend's), and a new shocker (aka tenshock 95).

Also today I got another HPR, this one is a 5009 which has been my dream boat since I first saw it. As much as I prefer the mhz mystic shape since it's a replica of the real thing, there is something special about this hpr design... It was built by Eric from France, the paint was designed by him as well. My plan with this boat is to slowly just spice it up even further and redo a few small bits here and there. Not really happy with how busy it looks on the inside. I prefer simpler setups. But this is functional so might as well just keep it intact for now.

nice! capacitor overkill! your right, its way to "busy" . I'm pretty sure you can clean it up.

Nice HPR, I can see why you want to tone it down a little inside:-) I absolutely love the 5009 as well, nothing out there built as well as the HPR. I'm sure you have plans for the cap bank, not sure what voltage and uf they are but it's worth taking a close look at. There is such as a thing as to many capacitors, if overdone they can become a problem for the batteries and esc instead of a solution. Dr. Wayne's epic capacitor bank thread is good reading if you haven't already done so. Judging by the quality of the rest of the build there likely ok but thought I would mention it.

Can you share the setup of the HPR? Any idea of the boats history and how fast it's gone? One other thing on the cap bank, if it's a shared setup for both sides I would consider separating it to make each side independent. Some guys like sharing a cap bank and batteries feeding both sides as one but a rotor failure or blown esc is very likely to pass damage along to the other side. Though it may be considered a better balanced system I think the risks outweigh the gains from the information I've gathered.
I can't wait to see the HPR come along and hopefully some videos as well. My apologies if I'm stating the obvious to you but thought it worth mentioning just in case

Yeah, no problem. The setup is seaking 180a v2 esc's, waterproofed. Motors are leopard 4065 1800kv. The boat was mostly run on 5s and 6s, the most it did, according to the listing, was 84 mph. The boat is a carbon fiber hull, purchased in 2010 by Eric. He went directly to HPR (hanspeter) place and picked up the hull and hardware.

I am still very unsure which direction to go with this boat. I am not a fan of anything that was done on the inside, including the capacitor plate, as that is a very messy interior by any standard. On one hand I just want to rip everything out, do a new inlay, and start from scratch with new esc's and motors. On the other hand, I might just use this setup for a while as to me this is a collector's boat and very rare since it's no longer produced by hpr. It's easy to get an mhz, but this one, well, when I saw it for sale I bought it immediately and I wasn't even planning on getting another used boat ever again!

Here is the latest progress on a few boats. Modified a seaking 180 v3. I like to add extra cooling to these as well as castle caps and run bec-less with an external battery. So far it's worked out well.

The spartan is now finally completed! Set up the SF 300 esc via pc which was a breeze once I figured out how to connect it. The 56mm motor sounds really powerful. Wondering how it'll do on water, will post on that later.

Also finished up the new rudder system on the genesis. The old one had way too much drag in the lines so I removed it.
