So Paddy, turn fins can be bought in the cell phone store down under?

This cell phone is made for model boaters Jan. You can use it for video, pictures, music, radio, xxx and even phone calls. I often call Helga the blonde Swedish Masseur on mine. She like to see me skinny dipping at the lake after my boating. Maybe that is why the ducks keep hanging around.

OK we got Krabbs in Canada lol I got a H&M Xzess 3 Krabbs off of RCU for a Xmass gift for myself. It came with a hydra 240 and a Neu 1515 1Y S . So now I need to get the rest of the parts. I have been talking to Paddy and he said I should post on this thread. I have been out of the hobby for 10 years so not sure what is out there for hardware. I was thinks of using the CMD thin hydro rudder. It is thinner than most and is 4.5" or 4.75" long. Will that be long enough? Need some ideas and links if you have them for motor mount, strut and turn fin etv. etc. Paddy told me his motor mount is a bit high and hits his motor on the lid My Nue also has a carbon fiber cooling ring on it so ify on the clamp motor mount unless they are thin. A motor mount that bolts to the side of the hull would be stronger I think. I was going to run 4 lipos in it would this be competative with this set up in a 4 cell class? Anyway any help would be appreciated on this build. One more thing it came with no instuctions what so ever Patty is sending me a CD so I hope that will help

Rick, you have got a big one, rudder I mean. Mine is just 3.75 inches from top to bottom and it is more than enough rudder for my Krabs.

Ok thinking today about this weekend’s events I am now thinking down the lines of, drag will slow the boat down and therefore if the drag is on one side then it will seriously slow one side of the boat and when the speed builds up so will the drag so if the drag is down one side the boat it will turn in that particular direction, in this case right and in addition the drag will be proportional to the speed of the boat. In other words the faster the boat travels the grater the drag and the increasing the pull in the direction of the drag........ hhhhhhheeeee........... (deep breath) therefore if the drag is proportional on each side the drag is double but at the same time proportional and therefore the boat, although slower will endeavour to proceed in a linear path. Rant over but a good point made think.

My theory is to halve the drag by decreasing the surface area by at least half and to mirror the turn fin on the other sponson. Weight for weight and surface area to surface area.

Is this a good assumption or am I back where I started, i.e. drag boat with no turning ability?????

Will the curve mentioned in a previous post correct the right hand turn?????

Slim, everyone else in the world only needs one turn fin and that is on the right sponson. It is all to do with the setup of the turn fin and the side you sharpen it on. You will notice in the pictures of my turn fin it is only sharpened on one side.
Now here is what to do.
Call a committee meeting of your engineers and discuss how sharpening a blade on one side will affect the way it travels through water. After the committee meeting you may all come to the conclusion that it would make it travel in a certain direction.
I agree about your theory of drag but that business of sharpening the fin on one side surely must have an opposite effect if the sharpening is done on the correct side.
Let me tell you a little story. A few days ago I mentioned I had a similar problem with a boat pulling to the right. That boat was my Mr. Krabs. Andy had even made fun of how I could not drive a straight line (could not drive my finger up my a$$ were his words I think). When you explained to me what you meant about snaking I woke up that we had the same problem. I was also trying to correct the pull to the right and overcorrecting it and thus I appeared like I could not drive. Now my Mr Krabs tracks as straight Douggies upper cut and is a dream to drive. The problem was my turn fin was offset by about 5mm over the length of the boat. Before I would set the boat up for my run at low speed and when I gunned it, it would pull to the right so I spent the remainder of the run trying to get the boat going where I wanted it to. Does that ring any bells?

OK I have said this I have been out of boating for 10 years. I have been e-mailing paddy for the last 4 to 5 weeks so I have not read all ot this yet. But from what you just said you must be a engineer lol. This is not a good thing as I have been a steel fabricator for 32 years and know how Engineers think lol. You have for got the prop at the other end trying to push the boat over with it's prop working like a paddle wheel. Have you ever seen a rigger or hydro with 2 turn fins? there is some thing wrong with your set up. The more eyes that look at some thing the more likely you will find the problem. You might be looking at it but just do not see it or you just might be trying to over analyze this hole thing. I would take your boat to a race and get some eyes on it. if that is not a option then draw your boat with your set up and post it here so any one with a Krab can compare for you same as more eyes. Simple works best. I used to be a team driver and have several national titles. how big is your push rod on your rudder if it is to small it will just bend when you try to turn. this is one of the fall backs of this set up I all ways like to go push pull but as we know this is not going to work on this boat.. I would draw up your boat with all your measurements for your set up and post then others can tell you how they have theres. Just may 2 cents. OK I have to ask are you a Engineer lol I hope this helps get you up and going

Rick you made me smile with your comment about how Engineers think. That is half of the problem. Engineers overanalyze everything and have too many committee meetings and I think most of those meetings are more about the consumption of coffee and the eating of biscuits than they are about the subject at hand. Fortunately Slim has also got a sense of humor so he fits in well here.

Sorry Paddy, the last thing I wanted to do was insult you and this thread, I am totally solo and do not have a band of committee engineers – it’s me and only me, the engineers at work still cannot comprehend how I am drawing so many Amps, but they are used to 415V 3 phase and low Volts / high Amps are not a strong point for them, I am learning from Mr Krabs, and so sorry to ask such inferior questions, I did not realise the turn fin was sharpened only on one side mine is equally sharpened both sides and I was also only following sir Isacc Newton’s third law, stating that every action has an equal and opposite reaction, hence my crazy theory into why you would use another turn fin to balance the equation. Although I am an engineer and you may all hate me and my theories I totally respect all other boat builders and listen to their advice. I can design a lot of things but not a boat, hence why I post and listen / respect your comments.

Bells are running but I cannot comprehend how to resolve the problems I have, sorry for being very and I mean very thick, that’s why I look forward to all you guys advice, because I do not know what to do.

I only know the things I tell you by the help that has been given to me and from personal observations of what works well with my boat. If you do not ask you will not learn. I know this is not in a Engineers vocabulary te he I'm sorry but like paddy some times the mouth runith over. Good thing your not a lawyer so you are a engineer, get on your autocad and post a pic with your set up.post some close ups pics so you can get hlep. That is what this is all about.
