The problem I have with this thread is: Say a guy wants to build this boat to race (P-Spec) and he copies Rickness' boat, when the guy shows up to a race and the boat runs like a turd, he's going to call up Jeff and complain. But I don't think this boat is going to be raced, so it really doesn't matter. Like I said before, if you're building a race boat, you need to think about weight.

Exactly. I thought one of the purposes of the builds threads were share builds and create am every growing repository of ideas so the next guy who comes along has even more knowledge to draw upon.

Am I make it faster? Probably not, but I don't race. Am I making it better? That is too subjective to even try to answer. What I am doing, it making it mine. In the process of doing so, I don't think I'm messing it up too much.

I'm no threat to anyone's sponsorship or boat building business, so I'm confused about the attack. From my conversations with Jeff M, he's a great guy and a excellent boat builder. I doubt he would condone some of the comments here that are defending something that was never under attack.

        Yes I don't race.

I want to say this one more time. Jeff and I talked about the aluminum plate and he had no issues using it instead of the plywood. I'm really struggling to understand the reactions to this. Is it because I added it versus Jeff? Is it because an Insane boat is considered a race boat? I beginning to wonder if I would have the same reactions if this thread was on a Asian built hull. Shame on me for buying North American.

You may want to start a new build thread on this rick, nobody will be able to see past all the ridiculousness above to see the actual work being done. They really crapped on things.

            Agreed bro!
let us know if you start a new clean thread about your build..
either way I am looking forward to your runs with this boat

              I'll keep thread going.

Not much to do until all the parts finally arrived so the only progress was to put a layer of CF over the wood transom and mount the hardware out back. You can't see it in the pic but the rounded the bottom leading edge of the rudder, then sharpened it some more, then polished it.

For those with a keen eye, yes I converted the strut from lead/teflon bearing to floating bushing by sleaving it with 1/4" brass tube. This will work just fine me and make it simple to replace the bushing if it ever does wear out.

All the parts are laid out so i can check for CoG. The way it's laid out in the pics for 4s2p and 4s1p, the CoG is 3" from the sponsons. Shifting it to 2" is simple and doesn't take much battery movement at all.

The motor mount is the first one of it's kind from HRC. I really wanted the rear of the motor supported (TP4050) had worked with Dave on the design.

I have a cap bank tucked under the opposite side of the tub to the ESC. I want to get it closer to the ESC and will have to see how much room is left beside the batteries in the 4s2p configuration.

For the inevitable crashes, I want to make sure the batteries don't move. I was thinking of making a very simple battery tray so I can use velcro straps to hold them in place.

                    Baking bread in the hatch.........
Added some flotation as well as front tabs to hold the hatch down. As I was sealing the tabs with epoxy, I decides to add some black tint and cover up the CF reinforcement helping the hatch retain it's shape.

                      This is where I turn a 4s2p set-up into a 4s1p set-up.

I wanted to be able to strap the batteries down as opposed to just velcroing them in so I fab'd a simple battery tray that would work for 4s2p and 4s1p.

                      DSC_0019.jpgDSC_0020.jpg

However I not test fit the hatch before bonding. Yes a 1/4" matters.

The the contour of the hatch doesn't allow anything to stick above the recessed lip of the hull within an inch or so of the edge. I knew that, not sure why I thought I'd be OK. I'm not going to even try separating the tray from the hull. It's in there for life.

The good news is that I just saved almost 500g of weight by not going with a 2nd battery, plus I have a nice location to mount the ESC. With a TP4050 2200kv motor, this thing will certainly be fast. Run time might be a concern now though.

Hey Rick when you do a pour of foam in a lid you can use a milk bag to manipulate the foam so do you don't end up with a boob , i'll see if i can dig up a pic for you

I do a few pours to make sure the area I want fill is, then I just cut and sand into the final shape. I cover it will s-glass to stop it from getting hacked up over time.

I've seen the plastic bag approach used in packaging large items in a box. A question though, if it's in a plastic bag, how does it stick to the hatch?

You pour a small amount to the hatch , watch it rise to ware you want , lay the bag over top of it , BTW you dont need much for a hatch to float :), then work the foam where you want it to go , Don't remove the plastic too early , it dosent take long for the foam to harden be patient , my 1st one i was , you'll get the hang of it , i hope to see you this summer .

Makes sense. It would definitely make it easier to get to it's final shape.

Where are you in Durham Region? I was born and raised in Ajax. I'm out that way often as my Mom is still living there and pick her up on the way to the cottage in Haliburton.
