1/16th shovel nose hydro build (Finlay plans)

Well I decided I wanted to try my hand at scratch building.. so went to kinkos and had them print me up a set of finlay 1/16 shovel plans. And then I stopped at hobby lobby and got a bunch of 3/32 balsa..
Here's where I'm at thus far.. gonna have lots of questions. But I think I can pull it off...!

Here's where I'm stopping for tonight.


Still need one more rear non trip, one more sponson bottom, 2 sponson non-trips, the stringers, bulkhead E, the transom and the deck center.
I think the plans are missing the hatches and cowl but ill figure something out..

Wow, looks great! man, how I would love to be able to do that, too. I love Shovel nose and tunnels that are made with wood!

well my original intent for this build was to finish the hull up to paint prep and leave it just as undrilled and sealed and sell it. but im not sure what the final product will look like yet so im not sure what im gonna do with it yet.....

Got some work done on this. Surprised me how quick it went together this far.. hope it looks good when I get the sponsons and deck on.:p

Got a little more done..
Had to make an extra rear no-trip. One split while I was beveling the edges..
Got one sponson bottom on tonight. I'll get the other one shaped and on tomorrow.

For some reason the cheap ca glue turns white when I use the accelerator..

Hey Kevin,

Great job so far!

I built a 1/16 Finlay Roundnose a couple years ago and really enjoy it. Mine is modified slightly from the plans and I used 1/16" plywood in some areas for added strength. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. Good luck!

I actually do have a lot of questions..
this is my first hydro build so I'm kinda lost on some spots.
In this shot you can see the spinson ride pad is wider then the bulkhead.

Am I supposed to trim that back to the bulkhead? It makes the outside pad really narrow at the back..
I'm pretty sure kinkos printed my plans out of scale.. tip to transom I'm at 24.5" which is 1.25" longer then it should be.. wondering if that affected all my templates equally or not...

There should be excess material on the ride pads that you will have to sand off to make flush with the bulkheads. Here are some pictures of mine during the build that might be helpful

Thanks for the pics. Those sponson non-trips are a pita to form.. ill post up when I get some more stuff done.
Did u offset the drive like the plans suggest?

Hi Kevin, You are going to find all of the nontrips are too big, as are the deck pieces which will need trimming in order. From my build I would say that it will be a lot easier to mount all the hardware before the deck skins go on, there is just not much working room through the hatch. I've just noticed on chief3542's pics it looks like he's widened the hatch opening.

yea im at the same point cheif's is in those pix. im seeing alot of variation in bracing and bulkhead lightening, is there a better variation to the plan bulkheads? what can i use to seal the inside? i have some general purpose resin from lowes and some marine grade fiberglass resin but i dont wanna make it too heavy.

I made this turn fin a while back for an old abs hydro. Would this hull benefit from a bent fin? What about size?.

Once I glass the hull and add the doublers I'm stuck for a bit. I don't have any hardwear for this thing and I don't wanna try to skin it and fight with it later so ill have to figure out a strut and rudder first.
