    Hello guys,

    today I want to start also here on OSE the building review of my new project for 2013. As it is probably not too difficult to guess from the title its a HPR 233. But why #124 and why the very last HPR 233"?

    Well the first question is really easy to answer, it is the 124th hull that came out of Hanspeters mold of the HPR/CC 233. Quite an impressive number by the way, would be really interesting to see where these are in use around the world. Quite a few can be seen in Hanspeters picture gallery. On the other side it is definitely the very last HPR 233 done by Hanspeter himself. So I'm proud that I got the very last one

    laminating/building the hull

    A few weeks ago I made a short trip to give Hanspeter a visit and build this hull together. It was a really nice visit as usual, here big thanks to Hanspeter and Heide for the hospitality and accomodation.

    A hull of this size is definitely a battle of material. Alone the amount of resin and weave used for the lower deck was simply astonshing. We used a quite a few square meters of weave and a few pounds of resin for the lower deck. Only a single layer of 163g/m² was glass, the rest was done with high quality and much more expensive pure carbon fibre and carbon/cevlar hybrid weave. Therefore the hull definitely deserves the word "bullet proof". Overall it took alone for the lower deck 6.5 hours laminating, the work of preparing the mold and spraying the GelCoat still NOT included.

    And here the pictures of the finished upper- and lower deck, ready to be put together and making the inner seam. This was really done carefully and strong with three layers of weave over the complete length of the seam. Should be fine!





    the hull

    After demolding the first step was to put it on a scale. Without the hatch the empty hull is just around 16 pounds, as said without hatch and some additional resin to reinforce the tips and the front seam of the tunnel between the tips. Therefore including the hatch weight should be around 18 pounds. For that size and stiffness really an excellent basis, especially when I hear what other hulls of that size have as weight.

    The hull is reinforced in almost all critical areas with additional layers of weave, only the front area of the upper deck is a little weak although a 2.5mm Coremat Sandwich was used! To reinforce that alone with weave would be way to heavy, I'll use a combination of bulkheads and special 2K-foam.

    And an interesting bet with a friend: When I put the hull against a wall with the tips down and fill it with water it takes a little over 8 gallons to fill the first 29 inches (measured outside from the tips). I then filled it 2 inches below the hatch opening which took overall 19 gallons of water. I think that alone gives an idea of the size.

      power plants

      In the meanwhile there was also a little progress with the power plants. In the german board they first guessed I'll be building it with electric power as usual but this time inspired by Christians Aqua-Mania I'll also go for a twin turbine solution.

      Therefore I ordered two SPM5 units from JetCat with all the accessoires, as date of delivery I got christmas this year. As this is quite some time a friend of mine in germany decided to borrow me his set of turbines in the meantime. So that I can take all the necessary dimensions and start working. I received them on Friday and started work on yesterday.

      These are two units of the "old" version which have 8kW each, but it doesn't matter as the outer dimensions didn't change. Here two pictures of these:




      As I want to change the mount system of the turbines anyway I asked JetCat if I can get the bounding geometry of these as 3D dataset for my CAD program - so far I didn't get a reply at all. Therefore yesterday after lunch I started working and took all dimensions and did some design work in the CAD programm. Here I want to show you the result, took quite some time.

        I could still make these with much more attention to detail, at the moment it is enough for my needs. The stock mounting system does have a weight of exactly one pound (1x ground plate + 2x angle bracket). My aim for the new system is to stay below 0.5 pounds with the same stiffness or maybe even more. Would save an overall weight within the boat of one pound which is quite a lot.

                Manuel, why am I not surprised? I had a feeling Christian was bad influence on you. hehe (the day my close friends starts buying turbines, may be the day I have to give them up) LOL haha. "remind me why I got the HPR"

                What can I say, awsome!!! I hope this turns out just the way you want it...knowing you, it will be even better!! (I couldn't even imagine what you guys come up with after Christians build)
                So when I'll be starting my HPR this week and pulling out my hair, I'll remind myself of the 3x bigger turbine model you're stuck with.!

                Gotta say though, watching Hanspeter doing up those boats, really makes you appriciate having one of them. ....(in the mail)

                      hatches/cowl - part 1

                      Yesterday was already some kind of St. Nicholas' day for me. In the evening I got some nice gifts from a big man (without beard..) delivered. One wonderful clearsighted cowl for the HPR 233 (extremely transparent with two layers 163g/m² GFK) and a wonderful frame for the cockpit glasses in high gloss carbon fibre. The quality of both parts is simply outstanding and the surface is polished to a mirror finish. These are on a level I like to work with

                      The clear hatch was a little must-have for me as it makes positioning within the boat way easier as well as marking and cutting the different openings in the hatch (eg for the turbine exhausts). When its on the hull its difficult to see, therefore the 3rd picture on the floor where you can clearly see how clear it is. And for just two layers 163g/m² its surprisingly stiff.

                            Can you tell me more about the layes used in the lower and upper? I see you called out single layer of 163g/m² glass. Can you tell me about the remaining layers?
                            Im going to build somthing myself sometime soon.
