How does the stepped-down flex cable hold up?

The f/shaft is not stepped down, just the threads where the prop mounts..
So, it will hold up just as well as any other .250 cable.. That is the std. size in gas boats.. With the torque of the Neu 2215, I will need the .250 cable!!

FWIW these cables work great. It has a 0.25" drive dog, but the actual prop shaft is 3/16ths. That way you can run both 3/16ths props or use bigger gas props with a shim (3/16ths ID - 0.25" OD).

I've been beating on one pretty good with the Sniper and so far no worries. Maybe 100 runs so far.

Thanks guys. I saw a 1/4" stepped down to 3/16" flex shaft cable on AeroMarine's website and thought it meant the cable itsself was stepped down and you might be using one of those. Working on my first over 40" boat and this bigger stuff is all new to me.

I got a little work done today, I installed rails and bulkhead braces... Also installed water out-lets and thu-hull fitting..... It took a while to do all the fiberglassing, but now there is a solid motor mounting position, and the hull has alot less flex with the bulkhead brace! All of this was made out of 3/16 ply.....

Here are acouple pictures before I finished all the fiberglassing... It is coming along!!!

I should have mine in the water within a week. I am just waiting on a motor mount. I had tried both a 2280/12 and a 1527/1.5Y. Neither worked very well to say the least.

I have a 2215/2Y (750 Kv) for mine. I also swapped out the 0.187 drive line for 0.25-inch.

Can't wait!!! Mine is a retro-fit, Mr. TxBoatPilot gets to drive a brand new one!!

No major updates as of today, I am waiting on a 2215 waterjacket and motor mount before doing anything else.... I need the jacket on the motor to work out clearance issues, if there are any...

I did test the 2215/2Y (750kv) in my 40" Insane Cat with a CC HV-180 esc... It ran very well, super smooth throttle response... Ran a X452 prop and nothing was over 97deg. after 1+min... I did not have my gps, but I would est. speed 55-60mph... I think I will try a X455 or X457 next...

UPDATE:::

I ran the 2215/2Y and HV-180 some today, in my 40" Insane Cat.. I ran a X452 and 2x 5S 5000mAh 20C PolyRC packs for 10S... The temps after a 3min. run, at full throttle the whole way, were 108 deg. on the HV-180/Caps,, 126 deg. on the lipos,,, and 142 on the 2215/2Y.... The Insane Cat weighs in at 13.4LB rtr,, this Avenger Pro with 10S2P will weigh about 17LB... I just do not think the 2215 is going to cut it for race trim....

I looked at the weight of these "big" motors, and found out that a Lehner 2280 is 800/grams,, the 2215 is 700/grams,,, Then I looked at the Lehner 3060 at 1400/grams!!! WOW that is alot of mass.... The 2230 is 1344/grams, much closer in comparision to the 3060... I do know there are alot of people running big hulls, with the Lehner 3060 and doing great... I think for a 17LB RTR hull, a 2230 or 3060 is going to be the ticket!!! I am a Neu kinda guy, so it will be the 2230 for me!!

Odd, because one of our club members runs a 2215 in a 20# Hurricane spinning an x462 for 7 laps and nothing is hot when he comes in. Speeds are plenty too. But 142F is nothing for a Neu motor, although I'd not want to get over 150 myself the maker says 170+. Comparing weights between the Neus and Lehners is not apples and apples - the Neus are more efficient and their open design keeps the interior cooler with airflow. 3 minutes is longer than any 1-mile race too.....

What lipos does he run, and what wind 2215? How long will our 5 lap race take in May? I will keep trying with the 2215!!

I would not worry about those temps, especially since the motor is not water cooled. 3 minutes is a very long time. A race will only last a little over a minute, 90 seconds with mill time. Your packs warmed up due to the 20C rating and running 1P. 2P and they would be barely warm.

I hope to have my Avenger going for next weekend with the same motor. Mine will have a cooling jacket. It will be run on 10S2P and will weigh nearly 18 pounds. I'll let you know how it goes!!

Where did you get your cooling jacket??

I will try a x455 or x457 this weekend, and only run for 1 1/2 min.... see how things go, I will also run all 4x 5S 5000mAh packs in series then paralleled to get 10S2P..... It is worth a shot!

Got the "tester" cooling jacket from Steven here at OSE!!! I will install it tonight and run tomarrow on 10S2P with a X455-457.... I will try and get some video as well....
