30" CAT, custom!

well while at my LHS i saw some of their used selection of boats, they had some very cheap.. i may have to rethink about making a homebuild one..

Lotta factors i was over looking from homebuilding the hull... IF it turns out good anyway, im still looking at 100+ for the hardware 100+ for motor 100+ for esc 75+ for building materials..

plus no prior boat knowledge..

This would be a good driveshaft, use 1/4" or 7/32" tubing for the stuffing tube.

Alright, so I realize it has been a while, and im truly sorry. But I have not given up on this guy! I re scaled the plans and cut them more carefully, and mocked up the boat using some cardboard. Not the best looking thing to go off of, but for locating and brainstorming purposes, it'll work. Im going to get some materials soon so i can start constructing the hull and braces. As mentioned in the second post, im going to use 1/8th ply wood with a small hand saw to cut out the parts. After re-reading the thread I really want this boat to be equal parts fun and functional. I have a rather large area to run this boat, so speed is rather a necessity. Unfortunately.
But i have a few questions..
1. After cutting all the material out of wood, is it necessary too treat the wood from rot an decay?
2. The stringers, which are they? As locating them is key if im going to make them full length.
3. What glue/zap/crazy is most fitting for this job?
4. Should a jig be built?
5. How much styrofoam do i add to the openings? and is there a correct amount?
6. is it possible to over stuff the hull for buoyancy?
7. Whats the best way to make sure the hull is square and plumb?

Dont seal anything yet,build the framework and skin the sponsons and sponson sides,tunnel floor etc and just leave off the topdeck skin then give everything a coat of sealer

I use aliphatic resin,its strong,water resistant and sands easily if needed

4. Should a jig be built?
I dont use a jig,i use a flat surface and a set square to make sure everything is square and flat and flush in all the right places

5. How much styrofoam do i add to the openings? and is there a correct amount?
Only add the styrofoam once sealed and before the topdeck is fixed down and only place in the front half if running twin or even if running single you might wanna change to twin at a later date

6. is it possible to over stuff the hull for buoyancy?
No you want as much as poss incase of flip over or barrel roll

7. Whats the best way to make sure the hull is square and plumb?

Alright now I understand. In the case of this boat, would it be better to go with 1/4" lite ply for the hulls and bulkheads or 1/8th? And is 2oz fibre glass cloth light enough to coat the boat? Also is their an easy way to cut out the thin bulk head members?

Well, got some time to snag some photos.. Hope the site supports /img codes..



all the bulk heads are cut. Working with 1/8 or 3/16th lite ply this stuff is fragile! Been using a scroll saw, a small jig saw and belt sander to try and get these pieces to as close to perfect as I can! Im wondering, if they are out of proportion slightly how bad will it hinder the performance after its all sheathed, epoxied and fibreglassed?

Hi, I think that the version I made is very superior to the plans you used. It handles exceptionally awesome both in straight line speed
and in the turns. It also has more space inside for batteries, radio, servo, ESC, and motor. However you are probably advanced in your
build and would have to start all over from scratch. A large number of cats have been built from the plans I used. Look for a thread called
34" scratch built cat on the RC Groups forum and you will see a lot of info. Your decision. Regards
