1/10 Scratch Built Thunderboat (Finlay Plans)

Got some sanding done on the on the sponson edges & where the sides meet the deck.

I had a bit of a mishap sanding part of the top of one of the non trips.
I was using my orbital sander and it got caught on the edge and cracked about 2inches by the transom.
I knew I should have just done it by hand but oh well what can you do.
I am thinking I should be able to fix it without much of a problem.

I am working on the sponson front tips where they meet up with the deck.
I was not happy with they way they were coming out when I was sanding them down.
I had to cut the epoxy & reposition them so they would be more flush with the edges.

I'm almost done a 1/10 using the same plans as a base, well actualy used the 1/12 plans and scaled them up as that makes a perfect sized Miss Wahoo.
Made a lot of construction changes on it because of the scale details I'm including.
working wet sponsons etc...
Mine is more of a wood over foam construction with the exception of the sponsons.
You should do pretty well at that build contest, I think it's between you and one other guy, unless thats your build tread over there. LOL the only one being documented.
This was my first WOF build, I can't believe how torsionally stiff this thing is! Glad it came out straight I don't think you'd be able to twist it straight!
I think the laminate of cross grain balsa and ply for the bottom is what gave it so much strength.
Looks great! Mine is ready for the mahogany veneer then it's time for water!
Not going to be racing mine so I didn't follow any rules for power. Near as I can tell I might have the only 1/10 scale hydro in Canada! Never seem anybody else pop up with one at least. The rest is done to the NAMBA rule book.

No the one your talking about on RR is T.C. he is building the 67 miss bud.
It is coming along very nicely. I think he scared off all the rest of the builders .
I am just waiting to hear back from RR as far as posting my build.

That was very early in the build. Much been done since then.
LOL nope no fear of someone else building skills, kinda just the opposite. These things are simple to build compared to a guitar or rebuilding a 100+ year old mandolin!
Thats what my home shop normally does.
Just finished planking up a new sailboat hull, came out beautiful, this one will be a natural finish so each plank was tapered and twisted perfectly, not a spec of filler anywhere in that one!
Looking for a pic of that Neopolitain Mandolin rebuild, can't find them at the moment!
I'll take a couple pics of the hydro this afternoon.
Any idea of the prop you're going to start out with on this hull? letter or number prop? Trying to decide if an x series low lift or a numbered higher lift prop is the way to go, this is the biggest electric hydro I've built, just came over from the nitro world last year.
Most things are the same, some are very different.
LOL at least with nitro it will or won't get on the pipe with a certain prop, with electric they just go up in smoke! I used to start out with a large prop and work back, now it's the exact opposite!
Gotta order an Allison engine kit and 50's driver, just waiting for my rudder, all other running hardware is in hand. Still have to machine up the scale waterpickups for the back of the sponsons, that will take about 1/2 hour. Cheating on that one and starting out with a couple pieces of finned heat sink! Might as well do a turn fin at the same time, I'll do that mostly on the belt/disk sander though.

I do have another question for you.
On the back of the sponsons where the side meets the deck I have noticed there is suppose to be an overhang.

I am not sure how far it should overhang?
Also should it be flush on the bottom?

I was just messing around about him scaring people away.
I am wondering if it will just be me & him in the contest of if any other builds are going to pop up. I believe the prop I will be using is a 447 & motor will be sv27 motor.
Sweet looking wood work I am far from building like that!
This is my second wood boat build & my first FE & scale build.

You look like you're well on your way! Like anything else the more you use the skills the better you get.
The next one you build you'll have a few more tricks in the box to pull out. Thats what it's all about, the problem is the better you, get the better you expect the finished result to be! Things that were as good as you could do suddenly start looking like big mistakes!
LOL you should get into the build contest! looks like a guaranteed 2nd at the worst, I'd say your build is right up with the other at this stage, I'd say you have just as good a chance of winning!
Next on my list is either a 1/10 Pay N Pak turbine or Wildroot Charlie.
I play guitar in a rockabilly band, grease the hair into a pompadour for the shows so the Wildroot Charlie would be a funny one to do. Too bad you can't get that hair cream anymore!

Something to keep in mind I believe when they run the 447 with SV or similar motor they are cut down I am not sure how much or what exactly is done to them.
Someone else might be better to let you know on that.

Wow been a long time since I posted anything.
Been to busy to work on the boat lately but I finely got some time to work on it.

Applied strips of fiberglass to most of the seams on the boat to give it extra strength & support and help try to keep things together if I do happen to have a bad crash while racing.

Also glassed the inside of the area where the wood cracked on the back of the nontrip.

I wanted to build this boat strong so adding xtra support is a must!
