Motor Upgrade for Delta Force Sniper 23

My Eagle Tree instrumented, out of the box, Sniper 23 recorded a GPS speed of 25 MPH or 40.25 KPH. With that as a benchmark, I upgraded the 2828 stock outrunner to a larger 2848 water cooled Inrunner. The stock Sniper motor was less than half the weight of the new motor upgrade. The new inrunner has a KV of 3900 RPM. With install completed I will be doing the first tests tomorrow.

I have included some pics for those interested. I also reference a video site I posted based on the stock, out of the box, performance.

I know these boats have been out for some time but this is cool!
The bigger motor has about 80% more kv and it should move real good

Is that stock outrunner motor a Turnigy? I could'nt seem to find any info on the DF website.

That's a good guess, and possibly correct

Here are the results for the tests today in running two diFFerent configurations.

                1. I assume this upgrade inrunner is a 2-pole motor and used this value for the brushless motor sensor on the Eagle Tree.
                2. The temp sensor was on the front of the water cooled inrunner and it should have had it on the ESC.
                3. I need to upgrade the ESC from the stock one I am using. Miracle it survived!

                First Run using a 2s, 5000mAhr LiPo 25C battery
(no big improvement using just the 2C since the speed only increased from a stock 25 MPH to now 28 MPH. Here is the data for a 4-lap run on the 2C LiPo:
                Max amps 61.36
Max GPS speed 28 MPH or 40.8 KPH
                Low Pac V 6.74
Total mAhr 2069 (pack is 5000)
Hi Rpm 31,006 (assuming it is a 2-pole motor)
Hi Temp 99.4 F (ESC was hot, temp ?)

Second Run using a 3S, 2200 mAhr LiPo 25-35C Turnigy
                Max amps 100.70
Total mAhr. 630 (very short 2 lap run)
Max GPS speed 40 MPH or 64.4 KPH
                Low Pac Voltage 9.38
Hi RPM 47, 294 (assuming it is a 2-pole motor)
High Temp 81.8 but very short run (ESC was hot, temp was ?)

NET RESULT IS THAT THE SPEED INCREASED FROM A STOCK 25 MPH OR 40.25 kph TO 40 MPH OR 64.4 KPH. NO OTHER ADJUSTMENTS WERE MADE ON THE TRIM FINS, PROP, ETC. ALL ELSE WAS TOTAL STOCK.

                RECOMMENDATIONS NOW?

How was the handling at 40? It is a very cool little boat!
My recommendation would be to swap out the esc for a swordfish 120, and let her rip!

Isnt that RPMs on the crazy high side?

                    11.1V x 3900KV = 432902 RPM. Thats crazy?

Looks like you need trim tabs or to adjust them if you have them on.

Im a newb, but I dont think your boat is supposed to rock like that.

I certainly agree. However I put in to the Eagle Tree a two pole motor and this is what came out. You can look at the motor specs from Hobby King, perhaps they listed the KV wrong OR I am using the wrong number of poles in the Eagle Tree brushless motor sensor set up.

Yes, the boat does rock too much. This is out of the box. I intentionally did not want to modify anything. At 40 MPH the side to side rocking is pretty dramatic. Being a novice myself, Tony Properchopper and MarkF will be running boats on my lake and set it up properly. It could use a metal rather than plastic prop that MarkF will match to the motor.

I am upgrading the ESC and going to a 5000 mAhr 3S pac also for the next series of tests. I will try to get some video when it has been set up by the pros!

Well with those two experts help Im sure you will be rocking in no time.

40mph is pretty dang fast for a 23" boat.

Just shows you do not have to be smart in life............just have REALLY smart friends! Indeed, the boat is less than 2 lbs in weight, not set up at all, and turns on a dime even at 40 MPH..........it is scary fast.

On 2S this motor would have blown the doors off of that 2 pole motor and alot less current = more run or FUN time.\
