'Way too small. At least 27" long with that sized motor and 3S. And balsa is a pretty weak wood, better to use lite ply and basswood. I haven't used balsa in a model for over five years, not since the last one broke up too easily in a crash. The 60 amp ESC is on the low side too. What kind of performance are you looking for?

What size of 540 are you refering to. S, L or XL
        Even a 540S size is too big for an 18¨rigger. I have a 18¨rigger and it has a 450 size heli motor. 3S via a 40A esc to a 427 prop
For an inrunner I may repower it with a 28mm dia 380 size motor on 3S and feed a 430 prop.

I do all my hulls with a lot of balsa but I build them strong and use hardwood in required areas. I have built a lot of hulls and broken many too. I use balsa as liteply is expensive over here and I am tight and slightly eccentric too.

        Small riggers are a blast.
I have a XL powered beast that runs high 60s, My mid size rigger is 540S on 3S that is good for 50+ and my 18¨baby that is good for around 40mph.
The smaller one is excellent value for money.
        See it....find the photos.....sketch it it....build it........with wood

I have a 1-off Rigged Insanity in 18" long (called the Rigged confusion) Even with a bubble hatch, a 540 will not fit even without a water jacket.

ok i am going to join in here. a rigger measuring aprox 12.5" beam x 18" long is a small rigger, i would even call it a micro. here is mine, it runs in the 40's. keep in mind that on a postal scale the weight of the boat rtr is a little over 10oz (yes with batt and reciever). keep in mind that a typical 540 short can weight is 7.6 oz. this leaves you less than 3oz for the rest of the boat.

i think you are going the wrong direction, look into little outrunners and keep it small and light. look into something like the renegade rigger, it is in the size range you are talking about and can be built rtr for around $150. dont get me wrong, i have riggers that run 540's (as a matter of fact i am working on one right now) but the smallest is about 27" and they weigh about 4lbs..

watch the video and try and decide which direction you want to go... good luck

the 18" uses the renegade rigger motor with a 25amp esc
                  the 27" & 32" are jae's that both use the ul1 motor/esc

it is the jae 12 and i had to redesign the tub to accept the battery and motor. basically i traced the bottom of the tub and made the sides talled. here is a link to the kit. if you search on international waters it is easy to find the plans. from what i found the kit is a better way to go because it has the boom tubes, turn fin, foam... everything you need. if you had to buy it all seprate i am sure it would be more expensive. i have a jae 12 nitro kit if you are interested. it has everything in it, sells for $49 plus $10 shipping new, i would sell mine for $50 shipped usps priority. if interested send a paypal to chuckstromain@gmail.com... let me know
