considering building a mini-rigger

As the title says I'm thinking about building my own mini-rigger but as I'm considering designs I would need to build it around the motor, ESC, etc. My question is for a 12-14" rigger what would be the best motor for it to get good speeds?

28mm or 36mm? I found a 320 watt 36-48-07 2900kv motor, good bad?

What KV would be best?

Just looking for some input so I can plan this right.

check out this one i got from rumdog.... it is super fast and a blast. it uses the renegade rigger motor.

That does look pretty awesome. I am thinking about making mine shorter than that one. Do you have a video of it running?

Anyone else have any ideas from what I listed as possible options?

I've got plans for a scaled down JAE rigger, total length without hardware is about 18.5". I can post up the PDF's when I get home if I remember.

I'm only about 1/2 way through my build though, so no video yet.

You'll have to use a 2040 motor, or increase the height of the tub to fit a 28mm motor with cooling jacket.

That's pretty cool! You really think that a 2040 will be able to push this thing? I thought I'd had to go to a 28 for sure. I've actually got one already if it would work. Just what kV would I be looking around?

I was originally planning a 2845, but didn't measure/think ahead enough before building the tub. I enlarged it to fit a 2200mah 3s lipo, but didn't even think about the motor until it was all glued together already.

If the 2040 doesn't have enough grunt I'll build a new tub or modify this one so it'll fit a 28mm motor, and then build a small cat for the 2040.

I have a 3600kv motor on the way for it, and I'll likely be running an x427 or x430 on 3s. It'll have the revs to push it, just hope the hull is light enough for the smaller motor.

Look at the 20 size tenshock motors. The minicat racing tenshock boats use them The Starship rigger uses the 3200kv version I believe, and it is a 50 mph rigger. I think it is 16"

So, two new questions:
What are you using to attach the sponsons to the main hull? Where do you get it?

And where do you get the tube for the flex cable? How do you bend it to the required shape?

^^ It's carbon rod, got it from the local hobby store. It's either 3/16" or 1/4", can't remember off the top of my head. I got the aluminum tube for the stuffing tube (flex cable) at the same store, it's 3/16" aluminum. It'll be a gentle bend, and I'll bend it by hand (carefully) with the flex cable and teflon liner inside it so it doesn't kink.

Rumdog, do you know of a north american distributor for the tenshock motors? The only place I found is in europe, and it was going to be well over $50 cdn for the motor (no cooling jacket) by the time I got it here.

I can't justify $80 for a 20mm motor and water jacket on this boat, but I'll keep him in mind for future boats!

Just to clarify, I'm sure the motor is worth the money to someone more serious, but I'm running this just for fun and don't even know how well the hull is going to perform.

try the ammo 20mm or 24mm motors, i have had good luck with them. if all else fails the outrunner from the renegade rigger is a good small one also (mile high rc, df400 motor)

I've already got a motor on the way, 3600kv 2040 from hobbypartz.com. That motor, with the cooling jacket and shipping to Canada was like $25.
