Thought I'd post pics of my FE30 rebuild that I'm working on. And a long short story of my thoughts and experience with it. As many of you know this was MarkF's original FE30 with the Leopard that went 64+ mph, while it was nice and very fast with room to go faster I wanted something a little different.
I bought this boat because I couldn't wait for an FE30 to be built for me and happened to run across this deal with the help of Properchopper, (thanks Tony!!) It's the very first production (pre production?) hull. It's slightly different than the rest of the hulls out there so I feel kinda special!
Anyways my orignal plan was to pick up an FE30 hull and hardware and set up a Spec Hydro or close to it. I first started with a UL-1 motor and Castle ICE esc which worked great for a couple minutes. (esc got wet) it was VERY fast though. Very first run with no adjustments from when it had the 2200kv motor it went 55mph.
Kinda bummed that I killed the esc, I didn't have any corrosion x with me and it was bone dry the day before with the old motor. Just my luck! Well I went home and put in a cheap 150amp speedo and was back on the water the next morning. Boat ran great @ the 15 degrees timing on the new esc but it was a bit too hot. Jay (Fluid) had mentioned it might run a bit hot but i did it anyways.
Now the motor wasn't smoking hot but I've got some goals with this boat and I had already exceeded my speed goal of 50mph so after some thought (and 1 more day of fun with my very fast FE30 which finally hit 57mph
) I decided I would start from scratch. Here's the new setup and changes.
Added Carbon floor. Without Jeff's mount it was in fact a bit flimsy in the mount/battery area, easy fix and it looks good. It's VERY stiff now.
Went with an OSE motor mount so I would have room for 2x 4s packs next to the motor incase I wanted. Also mounted it a 1/2 inch further back for more room for my new esc.
Stuffing tube redone and made a small mount for it since it was pretty weak before.
New OSE servo mount. I was running a Hitec HS225mg mini servo but it burned out. Using a UL-1 servo till my new Hitec servo comes in.
New SV27R 1800kv motor, should run cooler than the UL-1 motor and still get me to my 50mph goal.
OSE UL-1 water jacket and ETTI 90 degree fitting's I need the fittings since the cowl is so narrow nothing fits.
Seaking 180amp esc. I held off on buying one of these since they came out. I like castle esc's but hell this thing's $100 or less and it should give me plenty of headroom being 180amp's everyone I know has great luck with them which means I'll burn it up on my first outing!
And for now I will be running the same Mark Sholund modded ABC H5 prop. This is the best prop I've run on this boat, a little different than the H5's the other guys have and it's pretty aggressive. As a comparison I was running 49mph with the M445 and 57mph with the H5. The boat also handles great with it, worth the money, not sure how it'll run with the 1800kv motor but I'll find out.
Anyways sorry for the long post but I've got a ton of PM's about my setup and figured I'd post it for people to see. I'm not looking for a speed demon rather a well rounded great handling balanced boat that I can keep on the water and practice driving.
MarkF just let me know my Thunder Power battery came in and I've got a Hyperion and Turnigy to test with my setup. Need to make a stop at the hobby shop to pick up some silicone hose and some heat shrink and I should be ready to hit the water. It's going to get some paint and some data logging equip shortly.
