Dumas Atlas Van Lines 40 size FE build

I started on this a while back, but its coming to life finally. 36" Dumas Atlas kit, FE, I made the cowling and made a mold so I could pull it as epoxy. Still have to paint the cowling, and wing. The hardware, which has been fitted. It is Randy at BBY's stuff, and is very nice. I highly recommend his parts if you are in the need for anything hardware related. He is right here in the USA, so you can feel good about your purchase. I am not paid to endorse his stuff, just want people to know his quality, and price is great. More info on the motor, esc, and the rest of the build coming soon. Enjoy the pics, Mike

Man that thing looks good. You got my milk. LOL. Check out my 16th atlas build. Can you do cowls for boats that small?

      Awesome

That looks really good man. I remember as a kid drooling over pictures of those Atlas unlimiteds back then. Grandfather had posters of them in the shop, then I remember seeing the Dumas kits all dressed up. wow, but after messing with nitro in the 90's, I gave up on the thought for just sport running.

Now I am building a 1/16 shovel nose for sport running, not sure if i will want to go larger or just build more 1/16 for the boys. I love the scale look. Thanks for posting this, gives me inspiration.

Xfactor, a small 1/16 cowl could easily be vacuum formed if you have the plug.

Thanks guys. If I had something to go by I can do cowlings that size. The time and money unfortunately would not be worth it for 1 or 2 parts tho! Here are some new pics of the wing, top covers, and the cowling. I will be finishing the cowling detailing tomorrow. Mike

What does a "plug" need to be made of?

Are you just using spray paint or are you using a spray gun?

A plug can be wood, foam, plastic, fiberglass. Anything the will hold a solid shape and can be sanded, and urethane primed smooth to make a mold from. I just looked at your thread for your atlas..that cowling you are making will be a perfect plug!

This boat I did all the color work with spray can paints. There will however be an automotive urethane clear applied to protect all the color coats, and the boat itself from water intrusion. This is a technique Sailr on this forum told me about, and it works great, and saves so much money on base coat colors! If you can find your colors in spray can, why spend all that money on exotic base coat colors ya know?

                Man thats a sharp boat.
What kind of spray paint ? Krylon? The automotive clear doesnt lift the spray paint? Do you use a certain technique for applying the clear?

Plasticote, testors, and if you follow the dry time directions, no auto clear will not lift the undercoats! Boat is about done

All I can say is "Clean". Whats up with the cowls ? What would you charge me to do them?
