Of course the level of public health care in countries with similar economic structure to the US sucks. Ask a Brit or a Cannuk what he/she does if they need critical surgery immediately.

That is definitely not the case at least where I live , the health care we get here is second to none and the best part of walking out of the hospital is the only bill you have is the parking meter . I wouldn't trade our system for yours for all the tea in China

Funny you asked. My insurance provider just sent me a letter saying the company they go thru is no longer offering insurance to "our market segment." They got another carrier. But my benefits have changed. I called and inquired why. They told me that this one has a better track record of paying claims. Huh? Oh yeah. The previous insurer was delaying payments to determine if my pneumonia was from a pre-existing condition. I called them and told them, yes, I was breathing. I think it got paid, finally.

Does that sound like a system that is working?

I'm for some kind of reform. But if what I'm reading is true, that the current administration sites Kaiser as a model. Then I am worried.

What happens when the existing Social Security system is declared insolvent because the politicians have been sucking it dry for decades to pay for votes instead of not touching it like they promised at the beginning?

well greed is every were. a few years ago had to take my 3 month old son to a specialist, was told unless he has a operation in the next couple of weeks he would die, had no private health and waiting list was 6 months. so did what any father would do and told them i would pay the $7500 bill (this was 1992 so a lot of money)
took on another 2 jobs as i didnt have the money
found out later because it was a life and death case the hospital should have done it for free, greedy doctors playing with lives
mind you if they said it was 75 million still would have paid it some how

Stories like this chap my hide. Where I live, Doctors will do surgeries on immigrants or people from other countries for free. And it gets on the news. As a matter of fact, the local news is running a series of reports this week about how local doctors spent 10 days in quatemala to give the indigenous people some free healthcare. They seem to do it frequently. Helping people from other countries. But in all the years here, I have never seen a news report of an american getting a free major surgery. I guess we're not worthy.

Well, I think that most of the stories you read are more the exception than the rule. Medical philanthropy does exists and I have seen many stores where it was not just the dreaded and despised non-Americans who were helped.

I should have been a little more clear. I have never seen a local news report where a U.S. citizen received a free procedure. I am aware of the good that many clinics and hospitals provide. But here in San Diego, it seems to just happen everywhere else. Maybe, I watch the wrong news channels. and I've all but given up on the local paper.
