Andy or any of you other mono gurus...
My DF 33 has always tracked to the right which make me use quite a bit of left rudder while traveling in a straight line. I was looking at it this morning and at full noise there is only 1 1/4 inches or about 30 mm of rudder in the water if the boat is sitting up straight. This causes the boat to veer off to the left when I release the throttle and the rudder sinks back into the water.
My question is should I use a longer rudder. I have come to the point where I am willing to sacrifice a bit of speed for a boat that is easier to steer in a straight line. Maybe some of you guys can chime in with how much rudder you have in the water at WOT. Also your suggested rudders for the DF 33.
That is my homework for today children. Maybe I should add a smile about here for those that have no humor in their hearts so they will know I was joking when I called you children OK 3 smilies for emphasis.

If you want I can take a better picture but with only 30 mm in the water at WOT then there is not much rudder to hold against prop walk. At low speed it runs straight but peels off to the right at high speed. Not sure what brand the rudder is as I scrounged it off my old NS 3. This is my El Cheapo (not to be confused with El Lobo) boat

Paddy, as I am still working on my setup I can't say for sure this is the answer. My rudder is 60mm below the keel and 85 mm off of the transom to the front of the blade. It can be shortened if need but I wanted to make sure I had enough to begin with. This is the rudder I used along with a picture.

Thanks Chuck. That sounds a whole lot better. I have ordered one that is 160 mm long. Mine is only 87 mm. The water pickup is quite a way up the blade on the new one so I can cut some off the bottom if it slows me too much. I can settle for 70 mph and stable but not 72 mph and crazy

DF 33 tested again today. This time with a 4s pack sitting beside the 5s pack as a passenger. Everyone has been telling me to run more weight in it to stop it leaving the water. Well I must say it was an amazing transformation. The boat was much more stable in light chop. At 64 mph or 103 Kph it was traveling very smoothly indeed and never looked like jumping as it crossed its own wake.
Now the reason for my writing is not to give you this good news but to ask a question. I have lost 8 mph in speed with the 4s pack as a passenger. Will I gain some of the speed back when I run 5s2p or can I kiss it goodbye?

Paddy the mono newbie. Watch me go when I learn how to set these critters up. OK I am full of it, I know.

Paddy, the problem might be is the rudder is not parallel to the prop. Extending the rudder, may solve the problem. That in my humble opinion is why you are turning right. A simple fix if it works....nice arse by the way

Douggie you have a good point. I looked at some pictures of other peoples DF 33's and I see what you mean. Andy said to spin the rudder bracket 180 degrees to get the rudder closer to the center too.

Hey guys I think that a 70mph 33" mono could get away with the rudder in the air!!! Only problem I can see is low speed turns would not happen, but this should not matter as we have all seen Paddy's driving skill
