Chuck, you're SO right ! Jackson Browne was seminal in the seventies, along with Glen Fry, J.D. Souther, Linda Rondstadt et. al. in what was then, and still is, some of the best musical product ever. Jackson was a customer at the Hi Fi store I was working in during my "Hollywood Days" & flipped backstage passes for Him & the Eagles to us rock star wannabees*. That tune hit home- I was THERE at the Universal Ampitheatre in Hollywood when he closed his "Running on Empty" tour with "Stay"- the crowd was on it's feet, lighters in hand & went wild when Lindley did his falsetto bit. OMG !
In "Stay", Browne humbly displays a beautiful, genuine connection with the audience/fans : " People You have the power over what we do, You can sit there and wait, or You can Pull Us Through (So People Stay!)". Gotta' love it

Looks like an in-put recording monitor, and an equalizer.

In the past decade, recorded music has gotten louder — and has deteriorated from a sound-quality standpoint. A recording engineer discusses "the loudness wars," and a psychology professor explains why the ubiquity of MP3s has changed what we hear.
