Last quarter i took a health economics from a retired doctor and he said most of the hospital charges are BS and that theres a 50-80% markup on most bills.

My god mother spent a day and change in the hospital and her bill was 34 plus thousand.Samuel Johnson - “An injustice anywhere is an injustice everywhere.” William Cooper "listen to everything, read everything, and believe nothing unless you can prove it in your own research!"

The hospitals bill like this because they can.
My daughter was in for 2 weeks 20 years ago and the bill was over $50K. Nice, my gross income was $45K at the time. The insurance company actually paid just a tad over $12K. My portion was $25 for the emergency room. The hospital was OK with that.

If you were in Canada and had OHIP (Ontario Health insurance plan) Which most Canadians do, you would only be out your cost of Bed, TV, and Phone. The last 2 you don;t need that bad and the phone is like $30/month or something.
30 days @ $200/day for a bed, not bad. If you have additional health insurance from work or whatever, then yuou just pay phone and tv. There might be some others fees but, I haven't experienced any...

Can you forfeit a bed for a sleeping bag?Originally posted by ray schrauwen View PostIf you were in Canada and had OHIP (Ontario Health insurance plan) Which most Canadians do, you would only be out your cost of Bed, TV, and Phone. Are you suggesting that a better fix might be tort reform?!Originally posted by bwells View PostOh, possibly lawsuit insurance?
How would we get all those lawyers in Congress to propose and vote for that? They'd all be disbarred in their home states as traitors!

Honestly thats what its really about. I watched a show on PBS recently about one of our local facilities where the commentator was the director the of hospital and he said in plain language that the cost of the emergency room has to be burdened to the payed users to offset the costs for the uninsured who show up in the emergency room for services. That translates to us as users paying for those who cannot or will not. Not in our best interest but a plain simple fact and one we have to deal with like it or not.Originally posted by bwells View PostThat bill is $3572/day for room and $1545/day for drugs, I quit calculating after those 2. I wonder how much is to subsidize their emergency rooms? Either way, It appears to be rather excessive! Oh, possibly lawsuit insurance?

That reason works for me...But what was the reason before 1986 when EMTALA was passed? I remember why that law was passed.Originally posted by m4a1usr View PostHonestly thats what its really about. There lies another discussion. If the so called people in D.C. who are supposed to represent the citizens of this country were doing their jobs, rather than making it a platform for their campaigns; that would be a non issue. I fear that this will go the way of so many issues that have plagued this country for so long. It will just end up being a talking point for another campaign. Why doesn't immigration just "hang out" in the ER's of many hospitals?Originally posted by Dr. Jet View PostDid the People's Broadcast Service mention how many uninsured ILLEGAL ALIENS were availing themselves of free emergency room services?Government Moto:

What? The Republicans would lose their source of cheap labor and the Democrats would lose a large voting block. It's a win-win for the politicians, and a lose-lose for the tax-paying citizens.Originally posted by domwilson View PostWhy doesn't immigration just "hang out" in the ER's of many hospitals?A nation of sheep breeds a government of wolves
