Tell you what, if it can be shown that his motivation was not mental illness but instead his religious views I will rethink my position.

Oh well... one of them is the "hero"... They both are, as far as I'm concerned, if they both even attempted to engage the guy under these circumstances... Sounds like if she hadn't taken the shots, the gunman wouldn't have been reloading, etc., etc.... It is what it is... They got the guy, that's what is important.

My point was more to the fact that in their haste to say something, anything, the press and maybe the military, anointed the woman cop as a hero while failing to even mention the other cop.

But anyone who runs TOWARDS a guy shooting like a madman is a hero in my book

We are all too quick to listen to media interpretations of a fast moving story. The old fashioned way of let us look at all the facts and confirm the stories was the best way, we are too quick to jump to conclusions before the facts are revealed. That is the problem with news gathering today. The sensational networks and websites are too fast with their analogy of what actually transpired

Actually that's a very effective way to stop a shooter, especially one who is not especially experienced with the tactic. Often the aggressor will turn and run - then you got 'em.

Works with some wild animals also. Others will consider it a provocation and attack when they normally would not have.

I have no direct experience in such situations and will defer to you this since it appears you do.

Personally I would run away from anyone actively firing a weapon and think it is counter to our natural instincts for self preservation to run towards danger. Hence my feeling that anyone who does so in the line of duty and defense of others is truly exceptional.

I think if a department psychologist found out you ran towards a suspect who was actively firing a weapon at you, they would place you on psych leave and possibly 24 hour suicide watch...

That's probably why it works. It counters what the aggressor was expecting, throwing him off kilter while he tries to figure it out. That second or two might be all that's necessary. "Fight or Flight" is pretty hard to overcome w/o training.

Hence my feeling that anyone who does so in the line of duty and defense of others is truly exceptional.
