Strut to dive dog washer clearance

There is only about 2-2.5mm of travel front to rear limited entirely by the strut. Maybe I'll split the difference I'm concerned with the forward force loading the motor. But also don't want the shaft to tighten up on the strut if the shaft shortens under load.

I'm not sure about the fixed one piece but if the stub is truly unable to move stem to stern like the genesis then a gap is not needed. The gap on most one pieces is the account for the shortening of the cable while under power since it is spiral like a spring.

it sounds like the stock genesis two piece which most convert to one piece setup. If it is you will need the disassemble the strut to remove and does not need a gap.

Yep. It's a 1 piece. You have to dissassemble the strut & pull of the drive dog to get the flex shaft out. So even though it's a 1 pc with this set up you are saying not to leave a gap ?

its crimped than its one piece, i ordered one of those before and had to be sanded to fit in the strut not very ballanced mat look into getting a better flex

Thats a two piece then. If the flex won't seperate you have an issue. Remove and grind the flats so it works easily.

Cant say Ive ever heard of this. Are you sure its just not stuck?

If it is indeed stuck or a 1 piece system then you must leave adequate space beteen washer and strut. Minimum distance is thickness of the strut cable.

The drive shaft is crimped on the flex shaft. Is this still considered a 2 piece system ? There are no slip joints or anything like that.

Since this is a two peice drive unit (flex cable is seperate from the drive shaft), there is no requirement for leaving a gap between the strut (teflon washer) and drive dog. You can snug it up, but not to tight that it causes binding of the system. The gap is used to to compensate for a one peice system where it shrinks when under load.

As it rained here, I did not get a chance to splash my boat today.

However, while raining, I was reading on the site here.

Setting up the R2 hobbies cat, and the way its set up, you need to remove the strut & the drive dog, then you can pull the 4mm flex shaft forward out of the strut.

The cable is ~ 9" long

Since it's a 4mm flex cable, should I leave a gap between the strut & the plasic washer that sits in front of the drive dog? Since everything is "trapped on the strut, I can only get about a 2mm gap. Sounds like the cable shrinks, or winds up a bt under load. If I do this, then all the load goes to the motor.

Thoughts - I want to adjust it when I grease the shaft.
