100mph Hulls?

As an aside, I had a conversation with a tech at Neu a while ago when I sent in a motor that crispied [along with a CC 240] from my H&M. He told me in no uncertain terms to make sure the motor leads can't move around. Interestingly the latest Neu's have strain reliefs on the endbell where the wires exit. Hmmm...Originally posted by properchopper View PostThat's exactly what I figured. I told him next build to really fasten things down. Likely something got loose like a battery & shorted - 12S @ nearly 50V & mega-amps- Ouch for sure !

Stuffing normal wouldn't casue a boat to catch fire, so i wonder it the batts came loose and connectors shorted or something else.

Tyler, I watched the first run, but had to go. The crew that saw it happen said that the boat stuffed on the front straight, half-sunk & started smoking. Gilbert rowed out, started putting it in the rescue boat when it burst into 3-4 ft. flames. He dropped it back in the water, helplessly watched it burn, and finally it was brought in with the ball. One sponson completely melted off and all that was salveagable was the rudder & strut. He's planning another boat, BTW.Originally posted by RaceMechaniX View PostTony,
You got any pics or video of the AM Thunderbolt burning up? I remember meeting that father and son after a district race and thinking to myself how my dough they had wrapped up in that sport boat. Ouch, that was an expensive crash.

100mph is no joke. Some throw numbers around like 100mph boats are just an everyday thing. I can tell you it requires an incredible amount of trial and error.
It took me years of building and experimenting to get there and several sunk boats.
With all this one might wonder why anyone even keeps trying. Well... The adrenaline rush of a successful run just can't be described. It takes months of work and preparation to just prepare for one SAW event for literally seconds of running time. It isn't easy but is it worth it? for me OH YA!
The comments above have been spot on. Learn by reading and going out and actually running boats. Carefully observe how they run when you make changes, keep track of what worked and what didn't. Everyone has to start somewhere and you have to walk before you can run.

Good response, what is your budget and hull choise, as that is important.Originally posted by mschaffer66 View PostI'm very new to this whole FE boat thing, but I have to say I'm quickly realizing that there is big difference between top speed and usable speed. I guess if its glass calm and you are doing SAW then you can shoot for the moon. But I'm looking at building boats that I can run ~50mph top speed in a little bit of chop and I seem to be finding happiness and fun in that process.

If you like the idea of a self-righting mono, check out a toysport syncron (with flood chamber) with a neu 1515 1.5y motor on 6S.Originally posted by mschaffer66 View PostI'm very new to this whole FE boat thing, but I have to say I'm quickly realizing that there is big difference between top speed and usable speed. I have one of these and am at 45mph on 4s, running a large x648 prop with zero motor/esc heat... got lots of headroom for 6S... those with more experience tell me this boat can get into the 60's...
Downside, it aint cheap!

After all that I am pretty sure he is in the corner in the fetal position sucking his thumb.
If you set your sites on 80 mph you can do that with some cats and hydros at a reasonable cost..especially with the new motors and HV ESCs available.

Well, we are waiting with baited breath for your responseOriginally posted by C-Mac View PostHi all,
I want to build an extremely fast boat but not a rigger. What are my Hull options since I am new to FE. What are some good name brand hulls I can look into?
Thanks for all your help

I agree with you. I chased crazy speed for a long time and when you hit a certain number you just want to better it and it gets crazy expensive. I burned up more ESCs and batteries than you can amagine. My best mph was 102 with my Hydro and i could not touch it from that point on and really spent money and time to beat it.I was so frustrated I actually quit boating for a month and sold it all but started jonesing and had to jump back in . Now i will stay around 70-80mph and injoy boating for a change.Originally posted by properchopper View PostThere's a very nice gentleman and his son, a Berkely Physics grad, who have been running a large Aeromarine hydro at Legg Lake. The boat took months of intricate labor to reinforce and prepare it for high speed runs. It was a 12S boat with top of the line components from Germany and probably was in the realm of $ 3500 - $ 4000 dollars to put in the water. Last week his son was driving and clocked 82 mph on the gun. Then it lurched, stuffed, and came up on fire. The flames were over three feet tall. Nothing was left. I've been to many SAW's where the 80+mph boats , piloted by racers with years and years of experience , regularly leave the water at speed with much damage - that is the ones that don't desinegrate and sink. If you're ready to jump in, be sure to have a big bank account, a fire extinguisher, and scuba gear

First of, welcome now the hard part...as Doby mentioned what $$$....the speed you are looking at is a missile...whether you are new to FE or not has no bearing on your question.... what gas/electric hulls have you run and at what speeds and how long have you been doing this sport? ...Why 100mph, as that is a professional ambition.... The hard part in racing is turning the corner in race/choppy water and again what is your budget for a custom hull and other components.Originally posted by C-Mac View PostHi all,
